MySQL is an open-source relational database management system (RDBMS) that was created by a Swedish company, MySQL. The company was founded in 1995 and was later acquired by Sun Microsystems in 2008. Sun Microsystems was in turn acquired by Oracle Corporation in 2010.

MySQL offers a variety of software products. One of their key offerings is MySQL Enterprise Edition, which is designed for delivering business-critical, enterprise database applications. They also offer MySQL HeatWave, a fully managed database service for Online Transaction Processing (OLTP), Online Analytical Processing (OLAP), Machine Learning (ML), and Lakehouse. In addition, MySQL provides an embedded version of their Enterprise Edition for Independent Software Vendors (ISVs), Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), and Value-Added Resellers (VARs) who want a proven, low-cost, embedded database.

In terms of technology specializations, MySQL is known for its capabilities in managing relational databases and SQL. It works with an operating system to implement a relational database in a computer’s storage system, manages users, allows for network access, and facilitates testing database integrity and creation of backups. MySQL is also compatible with most operating systems, including Windows, macOS, and Linux. It supports connectivity through application programming interfaces, which can link data to various programs, libraries, and administrative tools.
